Ankur’s struggle to get relief, PARC comes as his saviour

Twenty-four-year-old Ankur is a PhD student at BITS Pilani. His passion for research in Mathematics and the quality of guidance that he may get from professors at BITS brought him to Pilani from his hometown Ranchi. He wanted to follow the footsteps of his father, who is also a professor at a prestigious university. His mother too is a teacher. It would be perfect to say that Ankur comes from a family of teachers.

Students at BITS often commute by foot. It is usual to see students walking or cycling from one corner to the another. Ankur, too, had a similar routine. However, he had never imagined that the usual one hour of walk and cycling, will make his life difficult for the next one year. It was just any other day when Ankur came home after attending his classes. He was studying till late in the night. After a few hours of nap, when he woke up, he found himself in severe pain in his left leg. Initially, he thought, it must be a cramp, but the pain was becoming unbearable. He consulted a local doctor for around two weeks, who prescribed medicines but to no relief. The doctor advised him to get an MRI done either from Jaipur or Delhi as no hospital in Pilani has such a facility.

The family decided to get it done from a reputed hospital in Delhi. Unfortunately, the MRI test did not reveal the actual cause of the pain. Instead, the doctors gave him three injections just above his tail bone, on the pretext that it would give him relief.

Worse, the pain got aggravated so much so that Ankur was not able to walk on his own. A black spot developed at the place where the injections were given. Day by day, his condition worsened. Frustrated, the family brought him to a hospital in Ranchi, where five levels of MRI screening were done. The overdose of medicines had created ulcers in his stomach, so much so that he was finding it difficult to even drink water. After a long period of 8-9 months, Ankur finally got to know that he was suffering from Ankylosing spondylitis.

When he came back to Pilani, someone told him about the PARC Physiotherapy unit. The doctor at the centre listened to his problem very patiently. The treatment received at the physiotherapy centre helped Ankur in recovering at a much faster pace. Ankur can now walk with minimal support. He is still undergoing treatment at the centre. Our Physiotherapy centre has actually given a new ray of life to Ankur and his family. After spending several lacs of money, he got relief at a centre that charges a nominal amount of Rs. 50 per sitting. We are grateful to HelpAge India and our donors, who have been contributing for such initiatives
